India Witnesses COVID-19 Resurgence; Health Authorities Urge Vigilance Amid New Variants

NEW DELHI, May 24, 2025

India is experiencing a mild but noticeable uptick in COVID-19 cases, with health authorities urging continued vigilance and preparedness across states. As of May 19, 2025, the country reported 257 active cases nationwide, with states like Kerala, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu currently seeing the highest daily numbers. This rise coincides with new waves of infections in other parts of Asia, fueled by emerging Omicron subvariants.

While the national situation remains stable, according to officials from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), robust surveillance and rapid response systems are in place. Despite the relatively low case numbers, health experts emphasize the importance of vaccination, hygiene practices, and timely reporting to prevent any major resurgence.

Emerging Variants and Case Distribution

The JN.1 variant continues to be the most prevalent strain in India, accounting for 53% of sequenced samples. However, isolated cases of newer subvariants, NB.1.8.1 and LF.7, have also been detected. One case of NB.1.8.1 was identified in Tamil Nadu in April, and four cases of LF.7 were found in Gujarat in May. These variants are classified by the World Health Organization (WHO) as “Variants Under Monitoring” and are believed to be driving surges in infections in countries like Singapore and Hong Kong.

States reporting a notable increase in active cases include:
Kerala: 69 active cases (as of May 19), with 273 cases reported in May.
Maharashtra: 44 active cases (as of May 19), with 10 mild cases reported in Thane over the last three days.
Tamil Nadu: 34 active cases (as of May 19).
Delhi: 23 new cases reported, prompting advisories to hospitals.
Karnataka: 8 new cases reported, with a 9-month-old infant testing positive in Bengaluru.
Other states like Gujarat, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Sikkim have also reported new cases.

Hospital Preparedness and Government Advisories

In response to the rising numbers, several states have stepped up their preparedness. Delhi, for instance, has issued an advisory directing all hospitals to ensure the availability of beds, oxygen supplies, essential medicines, and vaccines. Hospitals are also mandated to send all positive COVID-19 samples for whole genome sequencing to detect new variants.

While the majority of current cases are reported to be mild, requiring no hospitalization, health officials across affected regions are urging citizens to remain cautious but not alarmed. They advise against neglecting symptoms like cough or fever, self-medication, and venturing out in public if sick.

Vaccination Efforts

India’s extensive COVID-19 vaccination drive has played a crucial role in combating the pandemic, with over 2.2 billion doses administered across the country by 2025. This widespread immunity from vaccination and prior infections is believed to be keeping the severity of the current cases in check. Experts continue to recommend up-to-date vaccinations, including booster doses, especially for vulnerable populations.

Authorities reiterate that continued vigilance, adherence to hygiene practices, and prompt medical consultation for symptoms remain vital in navigating the evolving COVID-19 landscape.
