OpenAI Expands with First Office in India

New Delhi, 23rd August

OpenAI announced that it will open its first India office in New Delhi later this year, marking a significant step in its expansion into one of its fastest-growing markets. India, now ChatGPT’s second-largest user base after the United States, has seen a sharp rise in AI adoption, with weekly active users of ChatGPT growing more than fourfold in the past year.

The company confirmed it has formally established an entity in India and has started hiring a dedicated local team. According to OpenAI, this move aligns with the government’s IndiaAI Mission and reflects its commitment to “build AI for India, with India.” The office will allow OpenAI to better support the millions of students, educators, professionals, and developers who rely on its tools to learn, innovate, and solve problems.

CEO Sam Altman highlighted India’s potential, citing its strong tech talent, robust developer ecosystem, and government backing. “Opening our first office and building a local team is an important step in making advanced AI more accessible across the country,” Altman said.

The India office will focus on deepening partnerships with governments, businesses, academic institutions, and developers, while also tailoring AI tools and features for local needs. OpenAI recently introduced India-specific initiatives such as ChatGPT Go, OpenAI Academy, and expanded Indic language support.

Ashwini Vaishnaw, Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, welcomed the move, noting that India’s digital infrastructure, AI talent, and enterprise-ready ecosystem position the country to lead the next wave of AI-driven transformation. He added that OpenAI’s partnership would play an important role in ensuring AI benefits reach every citizen.

OpenAI also announced plans to host its first Education Summit in India this month, followed by its inaugural Developer Day later this year. Recruitment for its India team is currently underway, with further details about the office and upcoming activities to be shared soon.
