New Delhi, 10 July 2025
A mild earthquake measuring 4.4 magnitude on the Richter scale struck the National Capital Region (NCR) early this morning, causing brief panic among residents. The tremor was felt across Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, and Faridabad. No immediate damage or casualties have been reported.
According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the epicenter was near Faridabad, Haryana, at a shallow depth of 10 km. This marks the sixth earthquake in the NCR in the last six months, raising concerns among geologists about increasing seismic activity in the region.
Experts Warn of Rising Seismic Risk
Seismologists have noted that while most tremors have been minor, the frequency of earthquakes in NCR has increased compared to previous years. Dr. OP Mishra, a senior geologist at the Indian Institute of Geomagnetism, stated, “The Delhi-NCR region lies in Seismic Zone-IV, making it highly vulnerable. Frequent low-intensity quakes could indicate stress accumulation along fault lines, requiring closer monitoring.”
Government Response & Preparedness
The Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) has advised residents to stay alert and follow safety protocols. Authorities are reviewing building safety norms, particularly for high-rises in Gurugram and Noida. The NCS is analyzing whether these quakes are aftershocks of past events or precursors to a larger one. Meanwhile, experts urge better earthquake-resistant infrastructure in the rapidly growing NCR.
