NFR goes digital

Guwahati, May 29: Northeast Frontier Railway is set to introduce wifi facilities in eight more railway stations of the region shortly.

High speed facility has been already installed at Guwahati and New Jalpaiguri Railway stations.

It will now be extended to the railway stations at Rangiya, Barpeta Road, Lumding, Jorhat, Tinsukia, Dimapur, Ghum and Darjeeling.

Officials said around 3,500 km of optical fibre have been laid along the railway tracks for providing digital connectivity facilities at the stations.

The railways is also implementing a project to provide passengers real time information of movement of trains. The project, called Railway Display Network, will also provide display boards for commercial advertisements. The display boards will be set up in 28 locations under NFR initially.

The NFR has already implemented the Integrated Coach Management System for optimum use of the coaching stock and a control operating system to operate trains with punctuality. Control rooms are being digitally connected for real time monitoring of trains. The Freight Operations Information System has been installed to track movement of wagons, locomotives and unit trains for their optimum use.

Besides, the NFR has also tied up with State Bank of India and has installed 81 point of sale machines (PoS) in 41 locations. Station-based e-catering for widening the range of options available to passengers for ordering food of their choice and also pre-cooked meals have been introduced, the officials said.

Scarp sale in NFR is also being done completely through e-auction.
