Modi for Muslims

Muslims have been a worried lot ever since the BJP came to power in 2014. But they may have reason to cheer with the prime minister himself taking an interest in their community. On his direction, the minority welfare department after bidding farewell to Najma Heptullah and handing over the reins to Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, has a slew of plans that Modi has cleared. One of his pet projects is to set up more than 1,000 “Sadbhav Mandaps” in minority areas, which will have a community centre, library, skill development centre, and facility for people to collect there in the event of a natural disaster or calamity. They will be safe there and provision is being made for food, water and medical care. Naqvi has also announced plans for over “100 progress panchayats”, under which minority community areas will have girls’ hostels, nursing schools and so on. This project kicked off in Mewat, Haryana on Sept. 29, and then moved onto Alwar in Rajasthan on Oct. 6. The southern states have also been included in this plan. According to Naqvi, “We will not wait for the states to approach us, instead, the ministry will go to the states.”
